Results of Iranian elections

The “reformists and moderates” have won largely in Tehran in both elections but overall in the country, they get about %37 of seats in Parliament and %22 in Assembly of Experts. However, following the preliminary disqualification of reformist candidates by the Council of Guardians in January, the “reformists” filled their electoral lists with new candidates, many of them well-known conservatives, some with blatant anti-reform positions. Therefore, the real percentage of “reformists” elected to new parliament is lower than the 37 percent.

Iranian government has released the final results of the twin elections for parliament and the assembly of experts held on February 26, 2016. According to Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli the minister of interior, the turnout was “50 percent in Tehran and 62 percent in other provinces for parliament and the Assembly of Experts.”

This number should be accepted with skepticism because the regime needs to show a high turnout in order to prove its legitimacy and push the narrative that the Iranian people trust the system and do not seek a regime change.

The final results show the number of seats won by each electoral lists. There were 3 main lists: Principlists or the hardliners, the reformists and moderates (supporting Rouhani government) and the independents, mostly conservatives.

There is a debate on the affiliation of some candidates as they are present in multiple lists. Therefore, newspapers and reporters have different evaluations about the exact share of each faction in the results. Here are AFP report, Fars news agency, Tasnim report, Mehr news agency, Radio Farda and BBC report.

Iranian American Forum has examined a total of 10 different evaluations and has arrived at the following results. It should be noted that the numbers most favorable to “reformists” have been taken into account.
