International Workers Day: Over 200 arrested in Tehran

Follow-up Committee for the Formation of Free Workers Groups reports: On Friday, May 1st, 2009, International Workers Day was commemorated at, 17:00 hours inside Tehran’s Laleh Park. The ceremonies were organized by: The Syndicate of Workers of the Tehran and Suburbs (Vahed) Bus Company/Haft Tappeh Sugar Cane Workers Syndicate/Iranian Free Workers Union/Founding Committee for the Re-authorizaton of Painters and Decorative Builders/Association of Defenders of Workers Rights/ as well as activist cooperative Assemblies and workers groups such as Follow-up Committee for the Formation of Free Workers Groups/Cooperative Committee for Assistance to the Formation of Workers Groups/Women’s Assembly. More than 1500 labor activist as well as a large number of workers from across the various provinces who had travelled to Tehran as well a large number of women’s rights and the student movement activists. In commemoration of this day, all of these groups gathered together in support of each others struggles.
Every corner of Laleh Park was surrounded by the regime’s disciplinary forces that was comprised of both men and women agents who had sit in wait for the workers and other supporting protestors. The agents then began to attack the activists as they began to dawn their placards and chant; plain clothes agents brutally beat and arrested anyone they could grab.
In another area of the park as a group of labor activists, women and students who had coalesced elsewhere and were marching toward the main area of the protest were surrounded by members of the Basij forces who began beating the crowd with nightsticks, kicking, slapping, screaming invective and insulting; more than 200 people from among the workers, women, and just average Iranians who were present were bloodied and badly wounded.
Other guards ran people out of the park, by threatening to beat and arrest them. All the cameras, whether mobiles to personal pocket size cameras to professional cameras belonging to reporters and members of the media were confiscated and all photographs and videos were destroyed.
