Questioning an American Professor in Iran

Jan 8th, 2009

Radio Farda: Last Tuesday, the United States State Department expressed its worries about the detention and questioning of Glen Schweitzer, a well-known American educator, that took place about a month ago in Iran.

The detention of Mr. Schweitzer, a coordinator for the Asian-European programs in the US National Science Academies, caused the suspension of exchanges between this research and academic center and its Iranian counterparts.

Based on a statement by the US National Science Academies, Mr. Schweitzer, who has made numerous trips to Iran, did indeed carry a valid visa and he was questioned by Iranian security agents for about three hours in his hotel room on December 4.

Two days later, Mr. Schweitzer was questioned for another six hours by the same agents and, without any explanation, he was allowed to leave Iran.

According to a statement by Mr. Skin, Iran has not responded to this agency on guaranteeing the security of its educators, and the identity of those who conducted the questioning is not clear.
