Iran Pulse in America

Iran was elected as a board member of the UN Women organization. Starting January 1, 2016, the three-year period of Iran’s membership begins in UN created organization for women equality and empowerment. The UN Women organization was created in 2010.

Iran had the lowest votes in a secret ballot among the 54 members of UN Economic and Social Council, after Samoa and UAE 53 votes, Turkmenistan 52 votes, and Pakistan 49 votes.

Samantha Power, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations said:

The low vote total that Iran received today testifies to the deep concerns U.N. member states have about Iran assuming a position on the board of UN Women.

Women have been at the forefront of struggle against Islamic regime of Iran in the last 36 years. Imposing Hijab on women was the first Islamic rule, when the revolution succeeded in 1979. Since then, Iranian regime used the most brutal methods of suppression against women. In Ayatollahs’ eyes, women are considered the number one destroying elements of Islamic law hence; keeping them under control was the aim of the regime through the decades.

Intimidation campaigns targeting women have been a regular practice starting in the beginning of each summer by vigilantes and plain coats riding motorcycles around big cities.  These campaigns are kicked off by Friday prayers’ Imams which taken over by organized gangs of tugs under the police protection.

Repression of Iranian women and activists has worsened under President Hassan Rouhani despite his reformist agenda, a U.N. rights investigator said last month.

The regime knows well if women are suppressed, protests toward the status quo by people would be more manageable. For this reason, banning women from entering sports arena is a preempt attack by the regime to force half of the society into a defense mode.

Samantha Power continued in her statement:

In Iran, women are legally barred from holding some government positions, there are no laws against domestic violence, and adultery is punishable by stoning, making it wholly inappropriate that Iran assume a leadership role on women’s rights and welfare at the U.N.
