“The violent response of the authorities against peaceful demonstrators must be condemned, and those responsible for the deaths and injuries have to be brought to justice.
let us all remember that the Iranian
people are not that different from Americans. They want their voices to
be heard, just like us. They want their government to be just, open and
accessible, just like us.
Up to 1 million people poured into the streets yesterday despite a ban on opposition protests. Basij (paramilitary) forces opened fire indiscriminately, killing at least one person and injuring several others. According to reports, as many as five students at Tehran University were shot dead over the weekend and another person was wounded when security agents opened fire on a demonstration.
The White House said it was monitoring the election closely, including reports of “irregularities,” after official results showed hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected by a huge margin over reformist Mirhossein Mousavi.
Thousands of angry people have massed in Tehran to protest at the election result, with some pelting stones at baton-wielding police.”Down with the dictator!” shouted the crowd as they streamed into one of the capital’s main squares after latest results….
In the run-up to its tenth presidential election from which women candidates have been barred, the country has witnessed the arbitrary arrest and harassment of activists and members of minority communities, censorship, armed attacks and suicide bombings.
This election lacks all aspects of a democratic exercise and moreover, the electoral system has been rendered insignificant by the doctrine of velayet-e faqih (i.e. guardianship by Mullah). According to the article 57 of the Islamic regime’s Constitution, the Supreme Leader has the absolute authority over all branches of the government and has tried to dominate every sphere of life of each individual in the country. Now four men who have held high position within the system and shown their allegiance to the Leader, are selected and approved as candidates and people are asked to choose one!
