A Security Council committee has accused Iran of violating UN sanctions by attempting to transfer weapons-related material, reportedly to Syria, on a cargo ship now docked in Cyprus.

Japan’s UN Ambassador Yukio Takasu, the chairman of the committee monitoring sanctions against Iran, reported the violation to the council on Tuesday.

Takasu said the committee sent letters on March 9 asking for “any relevant information regarding this transaction” within 10 days.

Britain’s UN Ambassador said the letters were sent to Iran and Syria.

US Ambassador Susan Rice said the US supports the committee’s steps to address the violation.
